Sep 13, 2026 - The Power of the Tongue
What if the smallest part of our body holds the greatest power over the direction of our entire lives? That is exactly what James chapter 3 confronts us with, and it is a message that cuts to the heart of every single one of us. While we often think of serious sins as the dramatic, visible ones, the Bible devotes remarkable attention to something far more common and far more personal: the words we speak. James draws on two vivid images to make the point undeniable. A tiny bit in a horse's mouth controls a powerful animal. A small rudder steers a massive ship. In the same way, the tongue, though small, sets the course of our lives. This is not poetic exaggeration. It is a spiritual reality that Scripture returns to again and again. The generation that came out of Egypt spoke words of doubt and despair over their own future, and that future came to pass exactly as they had spoken it. We are invited this morning to take seriously what we so often treat as trivial, and to ask God not merely to clean up our speech, but to transform the heart from which all of our words flow.
